The East Wilton Neighborhood Association was formed in 1997. Its first project was to save the old East Wilton fire station. The station sits at the corner of Main and Cemetery Sts. and has a small playground on the property. The town government was going to remove all fire equipment from the building. Once the fire department no longer uses the building, the property's ownership could be in question. The Neighborhood Association convinced the town to keep it. Then held fund raisers to improve the playground and purchased some new playground equipment. The group planted flowers at the Post Office and on a traffic island to improve the aesthetic beauty of the village.
The group became inactive until 2008 when they got together again to urge the town government to take action on a property that had been abandoned since 2001 and had become a safety hazard. The group then asked the selectmen to restore electricity to the old fire station so the basketball court could stay lit in the evening and requested permission to improve Bishop Park. A local landscaping company offered to make improvements to the traffic island at Main and Cemetery Street. The group readied the island by clearing material off of the traffic island and picked up litter in the area on June 11, 2008.
There is nothing the group does that will change the world. But strives to improve our little corner of it. The neighbors are considering other projects to improve the village and are always looking for members/volunteers and support.
